Obituary for Barry L. Schaffer

Barry L. Schaffer “Blue Bird” age 74 of Jonas passed away suddenly on Friday, September 6th at St. Luke’s Hospital Monroe Campus in Stroudsburg.
Barry was the loving husband of Maxine (Keiper) Schaffer. They celebrated their 42nd Wedding Anniversary in May.
Barry was born in Jonas on May 27, 1945 son of the late Harold and Joyce (Baumgartner) Schaffer.
Barry was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and served our country with dedication and courage during the Vietnam War, receiving The Purple Heart and numerous medals of honor.
He had worked at the NJ Zinc Company in Palmerton and later for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as a foreman for 32 years until retiring in 2000, during which time he also owned and operated Barry Schaffer Trucking.
He continued his hobby of tree farming at “Little Creek Tree Farm” in Jonas. Barry was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. He was also a staunch democrat and worked on many political campaigns. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the West End Fair, American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert , Grundsau Lodsch Nummer Tzae, Western Pocono Lions Club, Western Pocono Jaycees, and on the Board of Directors of the Monroe County Municipal Waste Authority.
We have been blessed with the presence of Barry in our lives. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Maxine, his children: Rev. Cherie Swink and her husband Douglas of Effort, Robert B. Bond III and his wife Teresa of Kunkletown, Stacy Bond and his wife Angie of Kunkletown and Farrah Schaefer and her husband Will of Kunkletown.
He was the loving grandfather to his grandchildren: Christine Mills and her husband Matt, Bethany Long and her husband Jeff; Robert Bond IV; Tyler Bond; Shane Bond and his wife Shawna; Ciara Bond; Ally Ann Schaefer; Dallas, Trenton and Falon Greenzweig and his great grandchildren: Gavin, Gage, Connor, Sadie, Savannah and Sawyer.
He is also survived by a sister: Donna Coleman and her husband Robert and a brother: Harold Schaffer; a nephew: Robbie Coleman and his wife Stacey, nieces: Emma and Sarah Schaffer great Nephew: Dayne Coleman; great nieces: Ashley Coleman; his mother in law: Agnes Keiper of Saylorsburg and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a niece: Jacqueline Coleman and his father in law: Earl Keiper.
Funeral Services will be held 11 am, Wednesday, September 11th at Gower Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Route 209, Gilbert with Rev. Cherie Swink officiating.
Family and friends are welcome to offer condolences on Tuesday, September 10th from 6 until 9 pm and Wednesday, September 11th from 10 am until time of service at the funeral home.
Barry will be interred at the Middlecreek Cemetery in Kunkletown.
