Obituary for Maynard W. Sterner

Maynard W. Sterner, age 93 of Kunkletown, formerly of Gilbert passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 10th at Getz's Personal Care Home in Kunkletown.
Maynard was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and was born in Dotter’s Corner on December 3, 1925, son of the late Harvey and Clara (Miller) Sterner.
He was the loving husband of the late Lorraine M. (Brotzman) Sterner who preceded him in death on April 19, 2007.

Maynard served our country with dedication and courage in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert. He also was a member of the Destroyer Escort Sailors’ Association and the USS Slater Restoration Association.

He was a member of the Board of Directors for Pleasant Valley School District in Brodheadsville. He was also a member of the West End Volunteer Fire Company in Brodheadsville, the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company in Kunkletown, and a lifetime member of the Four County Fireman's Association.
He was an active member of St. Matthew’s UCC Church in Kunkletown where he served on the church counsel, was a youth group leader and a Sunday school superintendent.

As a young man, to support his family he worked as a greenskeeper at Indian Mt. Golf Course, at the lumber yard in Kresgeville, and the NJ Zinc Company in Palmerton.
Most of his working life he had worked as a plumber for M.F. Weiss in Brodheadsville and as a pipefitter/plumber for United Association Local Union 524 in Scranton.

We have been blessed with the presence of Maynard in our lives. He will be deeply missed by his daughter: Wanda Smith-Wunder and her husband Daniel of Kunkletown. He was the loving grandfather to his two grandchildren who lovingly called him Pop: Jed Smith of Limerick and Angela Procita and her husband Dan of Kunkletown and four great grandchildren: Chase and Indigo Smith and Emma and Jake Procita; two step grandsons: Erick Wunder and his wife Jamie of Aston and Alex Wunder and his wife Keri of Brodheadsville and four step great grandchildren: Ethan, JD, Brooke and Brayden Wunder. He is also survived by a brother: Roland Sterner and his wife Shirley of Dotter’s Corner and a dear friend: Lillian Kleintop of Langhorne.
In addition to his wife Lorraine, he was preceded in death by his sisters: Minerva Zacharias and Violet Smith.

Funeral services will begin 11:00 am, Tuesday, January 15th at St. Matthew’s UCC Church in Kunkletown with Rev. Suzanne Brooks-Cope officiating.
Family and friends are welcome to offer condolences on Tuesday, January 15th from 10 am until time of service at church.
Maynard will be buried next to his loving wife Lorraine at St. Matthew’s Church Cemetery in Kunkletown.
